Virtual Field Day - Increasing Water Quality Enhancement Wetlands and Oxbows

Thursday, October 21, 2021 - 1:00pm

Iowa Learning Farms, ithe Iowa Nutrient Research Center, and Conservation Learning Group (CLG) will present a virtual field day on the benefits of increased water quality enhancement wetlands and oxbows in the Midwest on Thursday, October 21 at 1 p.m. CT. Join us as we explore a few different wetlands and oxbows in the state and discuss funding programs. We will look at how these water quality enhancement wetlands and oxbows can be used as part of risk management and nutrient reductions plans, and provide needed wildlife habitat in key locations. This highly interactive virtual field day will be a discussion between landowners, scientists, wildlife specialists and virtual field day participants.

Virtual Field Day: Blind inlets

Thursday, January 19, 2023 - 1:00pm

A free virtual field day on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 1:00 p.m. (central time) will feature research on blind inlets. The event is sponsored in part by Iowa Learning Farms in conjunction with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center and the Conservation Learning Group. Participants will have the opportunity for a discussion with the farmers and researchers involved.

Currently, blind inlets are listed in the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy as an erosion control practice that reduces phosphorus (P) loss. Blind inlets have been shown to reduce sediment and phosphorus losses by 80- 98%. However, gravel filter blind inlets are not effective for trapping dissolved nutrients like nitrate. This project, funded by the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, builds on a pilot project completed for the Iowa NRCS that looked at the effectiveness of incorporating a woodchip bioreactor into a traditional in-field blind inlet placed behind contour terraces and WASCOBs to reduce nitrate loss as well.

Virtual Field Day - Beavers: Superheroes for Water Quality?

Thursday, February 9, 2023 - 1:00pm

Learn about a study of beaver dams and their impact on nutrients and hydrology with Billy Beck, assistant professor and extension forestry specialist at Iowa State University and Andrew Rupiper, graduate research assistant , natural resource ecology and management at Iowa State. The free, virtual field day is hosted by the Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, and Conservation Learning Group (CLG).

Funded by the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, researchers are working to quantify hydrologic impacts of beaver dams in the stream system and their effect on nutrients and sediment to determine the influences these ecosystem engineers have within their watershed.
