Performance of In-field Practices at Reducing Dissolved and Particulate Phosphorus Loss

INRC Spring 2022 Water Quality Research Seminar Series: Focus on Phosphorus
Presenter: Antonio Mallarino, Professor of Soil Fertility and Nutrient management, Department of Agronomy, Iowa State University, and Nutrient Management Specialist, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

The seminar reviews results of research targeted at assessing the impacts of fertilizer and manure phosphorus as well as several soil conservation management practices on particulate (sediment bound) and dissolved phosphorus loss from corn and soybean fields.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient and many crops require P fertilization for optimum yield, but loss of P from soils can cause water quality problems. Soil P exists in many chemical forms, which can influence P availability to crops and loss in runoff. This presentation will show some of Cade-Menum's research into soil P forms and cycling, including P loss in snowmelt runoff and legacy P in a long-term fertilizer reduction study.
